Hemorrhoids are a “modern” disease that is widespread in both males and females. They are also the most common anorectal area disease around and approximately three quarters of the adult population have them in some form or another. In addition more than half of the over 50’s population suffers from this illness.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids

In some cases, the hemorrhoid symptoms simply go away within a few days but in most cases, however, symptoms eventually return, often worse than before.

Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl.

The main symptoms of hemorrhoids are:

  • Bleeding, usually painless. The patient may notice red on the toilet paper or in the toilet bowl.
  • Itching and/or irritation in the anal area
  • Discomfort and pain in the anal region
  • Lumps protruding from the anal region
  • Swelling in the anal region
  • A lump near your anus, this can sometimes be sensitive (painful)
  • Feces may leak (without your wanting it to happen)

How to Get Rid Of Hemorrhoids

Medical treatment of hemorrhoids is aimed initially at relieving symptoms. Measures to reduce symptoms include:

•    Warm tub baths several times a day in plain, warm water for about 10 minutes.
•    Consumption of a hemorrhoidal supplement or application of a hemorrhoidal cream or suppository to the affected area for a limited time.

Preventing of the recurrence of hemorrhoids will require relieving the pressure and straining of constipation. Doctors will often recommend increasing fiber and fluids in the diet. Eating the right amount of fibre and drinking six to eight glasses of water/fluid will result in softer, bulkier stools. A softer stool makes emptying the bowels easier and lessens the pressure on hemorrhoids caused by straining.

A number of methods may be used to remove or reduce the size of hemorrhoids such as painless non-surgical techniques, lasers for hemorrhoids, harmonic scalpel for hemorrhoids, and the use of hemorrhoid medications.

Things You Should Never Do When Treating Hemorrhoids

If you suffer with hemorrhoids, there are many things you can do to find relief. However, there are some things that you may not be readily aware of that can make your condition worse and prolong the healing process.  If you suffer from hemorrhoids there are some things you should try to avoid, no matter how hard the temptation!
The first thing is to avoid eating spicy foods.  Spicy foods are very enjoyable to eat, but not enjoyable once they have been passed through your body and exit by way of a bowl movement.  Spicy meals can cause additional irritation to your hemorrhoids which can cause them to sting.
